Frame it?

by smlp

I was having a look round the Newcastle/Gateshead Glow Festival last weekend with the boys and girls from the Newcastle Photo Walk and I decided to put some frames on my images when editing.

The comments I received from my images was that frames as part of the edit were not always a good thing; “Distracting” or “Pretentious”.

I know a lot of photographers that use frames on their Flickr uploads and I always think that they look good.  So then what the crack, Frame it or not?

  • How do you know if you should add a frame to your photos for digital viewing?
  • When is it OK to add a frame?
  • Should framing be kept for prints?

I think they work better as part of your blog, but on Flickr when you’re used to seeing all images displayed the same way, and you expect that – then I find frames distracting.

They also take up valuable space that your photo should be using – IMO your photos should be displayed as large as you can.

  • I think I agree with Anthony – sometimes the frames are distracting and take up valuable space…however it’s a personal choice. Sometimes when framing a physical print I’ll choose to add a matte as well as the frame, and sometimes it just doesn’t work. Experiment and see if you think they look better! Although personally, I like consistency so I’d either frame them all, or not, which is why although a couple of mine would look decent framed, I’ll not bother.
