{"id":10,"date":"2008-09-08T20:47:37","date_gmt":"2008-09-08T19:47:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/?p=10"},"modified":"2008-09-08T20:47:37","modified_gmt":"2008-09-08T19:47:37","slug":"ncl-photo-walk-the-calder-leadworks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/09\/ncl-photo-walk-the-calder-leadworks\/","title":{"rendered":"NCL Photo Walk &#8211; The Calder Leadworks."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was the day after the <a href=\"http:\/\/newcastlecentric.com\/news\/homes-in-morpeth-evacuated-more-rain-expected-tonight\">worst flooding in Morpeth since 1963<\/a>, heavy rain falling all across the north east, massive train delay in and out of Newcastle and I didn\u2019t bother to bring any decent water proof clothing!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/leadworksat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12\" title=\"Calder Lead Works Today\" src=\"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/leadworksat-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/leadworksat-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/leadworksat.jpg 637w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The fourth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/newcastlephotowalk\/\">Newcastle Photo Walk<\/a> went ahead yesterday and it was a wonder off to wasteland next to Newcastle Metro Arena to find a derelict building.\u00a0 I found out about the building from Flickr user <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/arroncupid\/\">Arron Cupid<\/a>.\u00a0 The waste land the building sits on was the site of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calderlead.co.uk\/\">Calder Industrial Materials<\/a>, a lead manufacturer.\u00a0 The site shut down in 2002 and since I don\u2019t remember it even being their I thought I would have a quick look and see what I could find out about it.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/pict0033.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17\" title=\"Old Stairs\" src=\"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/pict0033-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/pict0033-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/pict0033.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My first find was from the boys and girls over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northeasturbex.co.uk\/\">http:\/\/www.northeasturbex.co.uk\/<\/a> they have been spending<a href=\"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/pict0022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16\" title=\"Old Stairs 2\" src=\"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/pict0022-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/pict0022-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/pict0022.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/><\/a> a little time at the derelict building which used to be an on-site medical infirmary for the Lead Works.\u00a0 They had found an interesting part of the building that we missed on our walk.\u00a0 An old spiral staircase leading underground.\u00a0 If your into this kind of thing I would recommend having a look over their site; some interesting stuff they have found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The most interesting bit of information I found on http:\/\/www.northeasturbex.co.uk\/ was from Shepy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shepy.co.uk\/blog\/\">Check out his Blog<\/a>) Not sure where he found it but he managed to come up with a historical brake down on the site.\u00a0 This is what the site used to look like before it was flattened in 2004:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/leadworks-old-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20 aligncenter\" title=\"Lead works site before 2004\" src=\"http:\/\/smlp.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/leadworks-old-2-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1778 <\/strong>&#8211; Site opened with 2 acres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1785 <\/strong>&#8211; Takes in 2 more fields and expands to 15 acres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1797 <\/strong>&#8211; Shot tower constructed and opened, stood 174ft tall. The tower leant to one side and was righted by digging soil away from the opposite side and letting gravity do its thing until it was perpendicular again. It was visible two miles out of Chester-Le-Street, which is 7 miles south of Newcastle so must have loomed high above the skyline of the city then.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1802 <\/strong>&#8211; Start of work to rebuild site almost entirely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1827 <\/strong>&#8211; Rebuild completed, shot tower and workers cottages only original buildings left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1951 <\/strong>&#8211; Shot production ceased and the tower was closed, and promptly listed as a historic building.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1969 <\/strong>&#8211; Shot tower demolished due to safety concerns as it had started leaning again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002 <\/strong>&#8211; Site closed entirely by its last owners \u2018Calder Industrial Materials\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004 <\/strong>&#8211; Site flattened by owners ready for a planning permission attempt by Bellway homes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006 <\/strong>&#8211; Planning permission denied for a number of reasons, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Soil contamination by heavy metals requiring 50cm of cohesive clay and further 50cm of top soil to form a barrier layer.<\/li>\n<li> Elswick gas holders considered a problem, H&amp;SE required 30m exclusion zone, Bellway wanted 18m with a road running just 6m away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<li> Project proposal not deemed suitable or necessary for the location.<\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Seems Newcastle Council have been wanting to use the land for sometime, I found a planning document &#8220;City of Newcastle upon Tyne Unitary Development Plan (1998)&#8221; that outlines the housing improvements in and around Newcastle City Centre.\u00a0 The document gives an update to the progress of the 1998 plan to increase the number of dwellings in Newcastle by 10,000 and in it; it highlights that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Figures exclude the site of the former Calder Lead works, for which there is outline<br \/>\nplanning permission for development of 6.2 hectares but no agreed site capacity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Basically Newcastle Council have wanted the site to be used since Calder Lead works highlighted to them that the site would close back in 1998.\u00a0 10 Years later and the land is still unusable due to chemical contamination in the soil.<\/p>\n<p>So that the History but what about yesterday&#8230;.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Broken World\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3216\/2836380844_2aed3198d1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well; check out the photo&#8217;s from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/newcastlephotowalk\/pool\/\">Newcastle Photo Walk Flickr<\/a> Group and I&#8217;ll tell you about the homeless Pikey and rain later&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any pictures of the Lead works Infermary please post links in the comments.<\/p>\n<p>Know anything about the history of the Calder Lead Works?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was the day after the worst flooding in Morpeth since 1963, heavy rain falling all across the north east, massive train delay in and out of Newcastle and I didn\u2019t bother to bring any decent water proof clothing!
